Rosemary & Co Brushes - Which ones? What sizes?

Cheshire Art Classes is now a proud affiliate member of 'Rosemary & Co" brushes. Rosemary & Co offer an extensive range of brushes for all mediums - specialising in the unique shapes, sizes and materials used to create the perfect brush. My recommendations below are brushes I have and use (all artists have their favourites so sometimes my preference won't be yours)- these brushes are expensive but worth the investment if you continue to paint with oils and plan to look after them.

If you look at the bottom of the page I link some sets that give you a range of sizes to try!

These brushes are perfect if you want to achieve more texture in your paintings - you'll start to see each mark clearer with a rougher finish. Great for applying thicker paint. We use an 11" handle as it encourages the artist to paint further away which makes it easier to reflect on each brushmark.

"The Ultimates are a favourite for Oil painters. That being said in general it's worth knowing they are bushy in nature - and do splay out somewhat more than synthetics. They are a much rougher textured brush than synthetics are."

As most of you will know - I paint almost a whole painting with a synthetic short flat (size 6). I find the size is great for achieving accurate lines and filling in - the softness of the synthetic brushes enables me to blend effortlessly. I use these on my first blocking-in phase.

"The short hair allows for more control, which is ideal for blocking in and impasto work, compared to that of the Long Flat. A welcome addition to any oil or acrylic artists' brush collection."

The perfect brush series for doing all details - I have purchased a size 0 and find myself always using it for any accurate line work - no matter the subject.

"Kolinsky Sable is the best hair available for the manufacture of artist brushes due to being conical in shape, strong in character with a long tapered point and thick belly.

Our Series 22 take on the name 'designer' due to them being widely used by leading Design Departments in Film, Graphics and Illustration. A beautiful tapered sharp point, somewhat longer and slimmer than Series 33."

My favourite all-round blending brush series - super soft and accurate for achieving softness in areas that need subtle blending. Love the sizes of these that enable more concise blending without a fan brush.

"These soft goat hair mop brushes are ideal for softening and blending in Oils & acrylics. The oval shape of these brushes allows for more control."

The best fan brush you can buy - perfect for softening and blending large areas. I use this in every painting to achieve soft focus in my backgrounds with beautiful blended gradients.

"A beautiful Badger Fan – this brush is designed specifically for oil painters and more so oil painters who want a full-bodied fan. Another handmade addition to our ranges and by special request from artists seeking to replicate brushes the 'old masters' would have used for blending, glazing, stippling and when a fully packed brush is required to carry a good amount of colour when loaded or dust a large area quickly."
