Black and White Portraiture in Oils Explore the timeless elegance of black and white portraiture in this intensive 4-hour workshop designed for artists of all levels. This session will focus on the foundational aspects of portrait painting, emphasizing tonal values, mark-making, and the importance of blending to create both soft and hard-edged marks. By working exclusively with Titanium White and either Ivory Black or Payne's Grey, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how values can be used to build depth and dimension in a painting, without the distraction of colour. What You Will Learn: Tonal Values: Understand and apply the principles of light and shadow to create depth and realism in your portrait. Mark-Making: Experiment with different brushstrokes and techniques to develop your unique artistic voice. Blending Techniques: Learn to blend oil paints to achieve smooth transitions and sharp contrasts, enhancing the three-dimensionality of your subject. Soft and Hard Edged Marks: Discover the impact of edge variety in adding interest and focus to your portrait. Composition and Structure: Analyze and construct the human face, focusing on proportion and anatomy to capture likeness and character. Materials Included: A3 canvas Titanium White, Ivory Black or Payne's Grey Palette Linseed oil or other medium Rags or paper towels Equipment Required: Apron or suitable clothing. Variety of brushes (flat, round, filbert) - My personal choice is short flat brushes.
